A Map of the Poor or a Poor Map?

This paper evaluates the performance of different small area estimation methods using model and design-based simulation experiments. Design-based experiments are carried out Mexican Intra Censal survey as a census roughly 3.9 million households from which 500 samples drawn two-stage selection procedure similar to that Living Standards Measurement Study (LSMS) surveys. The considered Elbers, Lanjouw (2003), empirical best predictor Molina Rao (2010), twofold nested error extension presented by Marhuenda et al. (2017), finally an adaptation, Nguyen (2012), combines unit level information, has been proposed alternative when available data is outdated. findings show importance selecting proper transformation so assumptions hold. A can lead considerable improvement in mean squared (MSE). Results validation all represent improvement, terms MSE, over direct estimates. However, welfare only information suffer bias. Because magnitude direction bias unknown ex ante, relying on aggregated covariates should be used with caution, but may traditional models these not applicable.
